Week 4

LECTURE

In the lecture part, we studied about Adjustment layer and Filters which are editing tools to change brightness, contrast, color and so on.

ADJUSTMENT LAYER

The Adjustment Layers in Photoshop are a group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels. With the adjustment layers, you can edit and discard your adjustments or restore your original image at any time. This will make your workflow in Photoshop more flexible and efficient, and is an absolute must-know.

Adjustment layer has some kinds.
  • Brightness / Contrast
  • Level
  • Curves
  • Exposure
  • Selective Color
FILTERS

Using filters to edit photos is an essential element of Adobe’s graphics editor. There are filters to change color, add blur or create completely new image effects. Photoshop offers a virtually unlimited variety of filters for this purpose.

PRACTICAL

・Instruction
  1. Attach your best composition from WEEK 3 digital collage exercise below.

  2. Using the same Photoshop file, improvise your WEEK 3 digital collage into WEEK 4 by using Adjustment Layers & Filters on Photoshop.

  3. Explain what you’ve learned in the description section.

WEEK 3 - PEN TOOL EXERCISE (BEST COMPOSITION)

DESCRIPTION:

In the third week, I learned how to use the pen tool and made digital composition. Use the pen tool to cut out objects by placing anchor points and creating paths, and use layer masks to control what part of an image is visible. Then, add them to the canvas, and adjust layers and sizes. I chose fish and buildings as items that symbolize living things and man-made objects, respectively, and created the work based on these two materials. The curve which is a custom shape created from a graphic and the square graphic represent waves. When making it, I considered the layer that the two elements would stand out. Also, I used the Rule of Thirds to decide the location of each element.

WEEK 4 (ADJUSTMENT LAYERS & FILTERS )
DESCRIPTION:
In week4, we learned about tools that allow you to apply filters to each layer and adjust color and brightness. I adjusted the overall contrast and the colors were unified to three colors: pink, blue, and green. I changed the curve on the right to blue by using Hue/Saturation and Brightness/Contrast, and changed the top left circle to half green and half pink, shifting its position slightly. I also increased the saturation of plants and fish to make them more vivid by using levels and color balance. Also, the fins of the fish were red, but to create a sense of unity, I changed them to magenta by using Selective Color and added a color layer in the shape of a fish to make it look like a shadow.
