LECTURE
In lecture class, we learned about Surrealism which means a twist realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality. Also Mr. Fauzi explained Dadaism and Digital Surrealism.
Realism VS Surrealism
Realism
Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."
Surrealism
A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality
Dadaism
Dadaism is an anti war art movement with art works that is satirical and nonsensical in nature.
One of the most famous dada artist is Salvador Dali who was a Spanish Surrealist painter and printmaker known for exploring subconscious imagery.
Digital Surrealism
Surrealism is a cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves. In this digital era surrealism is one of the top digital art styles.
We can make Surrealistic image easily by using Photoshop, requiring just a modicum of photomontage skill to produce impressive results. The first step we required is sketching our image and gather reference in Pinterest.
PRACTICAL
Searching
In week8, I decided on a quote for my poster and searched for references on Pinterest to help visualize the quote. I chose Picasso's quote "Everything you can imagine is real" and I decided to mix both realistic photo and surrealistic images.
sketch
In digital sketch, I roughly draw my image and checked location of each components. I was confused wether to put it in the bottom left or in the middle. But I finally chose it put in the bottom left.
Making Digital Poster
Then, I started to draft digital poster
First, I selected my portrait and made a mask. Next, added a curve image and applied clipping mask, and edited the mask layer so it looks the curve image is coming out from my head.
Then, proceeded typography. Unlike, when sketching, I put my quote on the middle and emphasized "REAL" by duplicated and rotated it to make it looks like reflection.
Afterwards, I felt the curve part was blending into the photo, so I changed gradation color which was more highly saturated colors.
Final Outcome
I expressed the connection between imagination and reality by referring to Picasso's quote as the theme. I used my portrait and replaced the head with images such as curves, Saturn and the Earth to visually express the expansion of my imagination, then added gradation color to make it more vivid to emphasize it is not real. Also, the mirror-like reflection of the water surface symbolizes the intersection of reality and imagination, and also added a reflection to the text “REAL” to make it more realistic.
